Finally! We are leaving Gothenburg and it feels good!

Posted in personal on January 4th, 2007 by Ola Lindberg – 2 Comments

I moved to Gothenburg with Elisabet the 20th of July 2002 to start studying at Chalmers. We got an apartment in Tynnered. At first I thought it was great but the more I lived there, the more sad it seemed to be. Everything about Tynnered except the extremely good pizzas was sad.

After some months I quit at Chalmers and started to study Social Anthropology. It was great fun and I have never learned so much about myself, wars, society, cultures and humanity ever before. But study Humanities was not my bag and I wanted back to computers. I applied for the Software Engineering and Management at the IT University of Gothenburg.

We had a burglary and decided to leave Tynnered. I did some minor web jobs in the summer (2003) and at the same time as I started at the IT University we found a second hand apartment that we could rent for four months. It was located in Linné and I liked that a lot. I could walk to the ferry in the morning; home – IT University took me only 20 minutes. It was great. By luck, Elisabet found an apartment we could rent at Svingeln and this is the best thing with Gothenburg! We moved here the 15th of October 2003 and this is the apartment we are leaving now.

I liked the IT University and have found a lot of friends there. I liked Gothenburg more and more. I worked at One Off in the summer of 2004, made even more friends and it felt like I actually lived in Gothenburg!

January 2006 Elisabet got an internship in Stockholm. I continued at the IT University, got a summer job as a programmer, wrote my bachelor thesis and graduated. All in a hoop! She found out that she could continue to work in Stockholm, but had to write her Master Thesis first. I got a job as a developer and the more I work, the more I realize how much I like to work! And now, we are on our way back to Stockholm. Elisabet hands her thesis in tomorrow, we are moving on Saturday and leaving the keys for our current apartment on Monday. I’m excited!

This image represents Gothenburg as I know and love it. It’s hard to explain the love for a wall so I will not even try, but the colors are an important factor.

Gothenburg as I know and love it!

Thanks Gothenburg. I might be back!

Bachelor Thesis!

Posted in personal on June 3rd, 2006 by Ola Lindberg – Be the first to comment

In the last semester at the IT University I wrote my Bachelor Thesis together with Peter Thorin. We evaluated the maturity of a Microsoft tool for model driven development called Microsoft Domain-Specific Languge Tools (DSL Tools).

The work included building a MetaModel for Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) using DSL Tools and compare the results, both in the time it took to develop the MetaModel and the number of elements in our language, with existing studies on similar techniques (UML MetaModel extensions and UML Profiles).

Since no definition for SOA existed a literature review was conducted as part of the work. This resulted in a requirement specification for what elements that should be included in our SOA based on in how many different studies an element was mentioned.

The work was very interesting since no previos work on DSL Tools were available and that DSL Tools will become an important technique when developing software.

The work resulted in an article; Bachelors article: Evaluating Microsoft Domain-Specific Language Tools – an Empirical Study of Domain-Specific Languages and Service-Oriented Architecture. The study was rewarded with an A.

Update 071129: An improved version of this paper has been accepted to the SERPS conference! Paper details: 7th Conference on Software Engineering Research and Practice in Sweden, Volume 2007:02, page 23-32 - 2007. More information on is also available on Götebords University web site.

Term fives project; Socio done!

Posted in personal on January 11th, 2006 by Ola Lindberg – Be the first to comment

Socio Icon The fifth semester (at the IT University) I was part of a six person team that analyzed an existing application written for Mac OS X (in Objective-C), with the ambitions to reuse as much as possible of the application, though changing requirements for it.

The first requirement added, was that the new application (Socio) should be available on other platforms than Mac OS X. This requirement was achieved by building the new code in C# / Mono and embedding both the Mono runtime and the Objective-C runtime in a C application.

The second requirement added was to make the current monolith application extendable. This requirement was solved by creating a Plug-in architecture where the whole application runs as different plug-ins for the complete functionality.

The first thing that was done was an analysis of the current application followed by the creation of a requirement specification and architecture for this application (no requirements or architecture documents were available). Then we added the two requirements and created a new architecture that was implemented.

The hardest part in this project was to understand, learn and make all different techniques work together.

My roles in this project were as architect and developer.

The following artifacts were produced during the project:

  • Article - An Evaluation of Porting and Reuse Activities
  • Requirements
  • Architecture
  • Design
  • And a number of other documents

Download all documentation from the Socio project (16 MB)

Development for this project is continued; see the Socio web site and the Sharp Wired web site for more information.
