Anti-spam for comments in Wordpress

Posted in Uncategorized on April 6th, 2006 by Ola Lindberg – Be the first to comment

I have some problems with spam in the comment area in Wordpress (this blog). So I started to look for a plugin that could handle this. I have seen that people use captcha (images with letters that you should insert when submitting a post) plugins but since I think that some people might have problems reading the letters I don’t want to use it.

So I looked at another plugin called Did You Pass Math?. It works but has some issues. For example if you write a comment and forgets to fill in the field for the answer you will lose the data.

Then I found out that WorPress actually have created a technique where they will match comments against a database. The plugin is called Akismet and is installed by default in WordPress. All you have to do is to register on WordPress.com to get an API Key.

I hope this will solve the problems!

TLLTS interview with Bruce Perens

The Linux Link Tech Show (TLLTS) did an interesting interview with Bruce Perens on the Linux World Expo (LWS). I recommend all people that are interested in software development or open source to listen to the interview.

Most of the interview is spent on discussing legal or licensing problems in the open source community and how Digital Rights Management (DRM) and software patents affect open source development. They also discuss accessibility on web sites.

To download the file visit tllts.org and download episode 132-lwe-04-05-06. Direct link: Mp3 and Ogg. The interview starts about 10:30 in the file.

Google Desktop - No program icons in Quick search

Posted in Uncategorized on April 1st, 2006 by Ola Lindberg – 1 Comment

I have a strange problem with Google Desktop. I use the Quick Search as a program lancher but when I do the search in the QuickSearch I don’t get the icons (or the same seach results) as when I do the search in the Side Bar.
See the images below

No icons in Google Quick Search
No icons (and “incomplete” desktop search) in Quick Search.

Icons in Google Desktop Seach
Icons (and “complete” desktop search) in the Google Sidebar search.

Is there any one that knows where I can adjust this? Thanks in advance!

Update: I have now removed GDS and reinstalled it. No luck. So I mailed Googles support and we’ll see if they can come up with anything. I’ll keep you posted!

Update 2: I was in contact with Google a number of times and their best solution was to remove EVERYTHING (including the databases, settings, etc) and reinstall Google Desktop. This solution did work, so if you have similar problems that’s the way to go.
